Juan Atkins, the pioneering Detroit producer and DJ widely regarded as one of the founders of techno, has died at the age of 64.

The news was announced on November 1st, 2026, by Greensmith Artists, the agency representing Atkins. A representative later confirmed to Resident Advisor that he had been found unresponsive in his hotel room in Mexico City ahead of a scheduled performance at YuYu Cine Club. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At the time of publication, an official cause of death has not been confirmed.

Born in Detroit in 1962, Atkins became one of the central figures in the creation of Detroit techno alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. The three became known as the Belleville Three, whose work during the early 1980s helped establish a new form of electronic music rooted in technology, futurism, funk, and the industrial character of Detroit.

Atkins formed Cybotron with Richard Davis in 1980. Records including ‘Alleys of Your Mind’ and ‘Clear’ became early landmarks in electronic music, with ‘Clear’ in particular gaining lasting influence across techno, electro, and hip hop.

After leaving Cybotron, he began recording as Model 500 and founded Metroplex in 1985. That same year he released ‘No UFOs,’ a record that became one of the defining early statements of Detroit techno.

His work alongside May and Saunderson later reached audiences in Europe, where Detroit records became central to the growth of club culture during the late 1980s. Atkins’ ‘Techno Music’ appeared on the influential 1988 compilation ‘Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit,’ which helped establish the term techno internationally.

Across more than four decades, Atkins continued recording and performing under projects including Model 500 and Infiniti. He also worked closely with Moritz von Oswald as Borderland, extending a creative relationship between Detroit and Berlin that produced albums including ‘Borderland’ and ‘Transport.’

Atkins remained active until the final weeks of his life. On October 23rd, he appeared in Amsterdam as part of Four Decades of Detroit Techno, alongside Octave One, Terrence Dixon, Kenny Larkin, DJ Pierre, and others. He was scheduled to perform in Mexico City on October 31st, 2026.

Few artists have had such a direct role in the birth of an entire musical culture. Through Cybotron, Model 500, Metroplex, and the Belleville Three, Juan Atkins helped establish ideas and records that became part of techno’s foundation and continue to influence generations of artists around the world.
